Chaitra Week #1: Just My Luck

When bad things happen to me, I don't really care. I have an everlasting faith that everything will just fall into place for me. It's as if the universe bends for me to be okay. Every time I should have tripped over or gotten an answer wrong, for some reason, I get away with it and simply go about my day.

I observed this especially when I worked at a camp in the Redwoods this summer. While I was there, I felt increasingly connected with nature as I got more disconnected from the internet and "the real world." Having time away from the stress of school and the lingering fear of my future cleared my mind and brought me what I describe to my friends as "true inner peace."

During the school year, I would do well on some tests, bad on a couple. Some days I had way too much work to do, and some days I slept for hours after coming home. Unlike the school year, my time during the summer felt like a constant uphill, in comparison to ups and downs.

Let me tell you a story about my dearest possession of all time, my AirPods. I was walking down a hill from my cabin to where the laundry machines were, with my hamper of clothes. In my pocket, I had two plain white detergent pods and my AirPods. I put my laundry and two white detergent pods into the machine (or so I thought), closed it shut, and walked away. As I strolled back up the hill, I reached into my pocket to pull out my AirPods, only to find a white laundry detergent pod. I rushed down the hill and pried open the washing machine, to see my dear and now soapy AirPods floating around. I opened the case, and just my luck–they are perfectly fine and functioning. Who would have thought? I would assume that 10 minutes in a violent spinning water machine would hurt my dear AirPods, but they prevailed.

This experience had me literally crying tears of joy, but after I calmed down, I took some time to appreciate how instances like this are so common for me. All the times I should've fallen over at night while running, or the times I guessed an answer and just so happened to be correct.

I reflected that one of the reasons everything always works out for me is because I genuinely believe that it will. As I hurried back down the hill for my AirPods, I kept thinking to myself, "They will be okay." And they were. A major piece of my identity is my eternal belief that at the end of the day, everything, including me, will be okay. And it always is! Like my dear AirPods, I will also prevail.

  1. Hi Chaitra! Your blog post and style of writing is really beautiful. It really made me reconsider the way I frame negative occurrences in my life. Your story about your Airpods made me pretty scared for a second, because accidentally putting mine in the wash is quite literally one of my biggest fears. I'm so glad that yours are still working! Listening devices aside, your last paragraph really resonated with me. I think your belief that everything is going to be okay really has caused things in your life to be okay. It’s such a unique way of thinking about life. I'm curious to know, have you always thought this way? Or did you consciously reframe your thinking as you were growing up?

  2. Hello Chaitra! Thank you for sharing your blog because I enjoyed reading it but more than that— I loved being able to get to know you more and how you think. It’s so endearing that you think so positively, especially as I understand how easy it is to look at a cup and assume that it is half empty.

I have always believed that choosing to keep an open perspective and viewing life positively is very important. From daily life instances like you said, such as getting over a wrongly answered question easily, to wherever life takes you, such as your time working in the Redwoods and your airpods. These seemingly small hopeful beliefs are what slowly builds a loving and bright person, and trust me, after reading your blog and knowing you as a person, it really shows! To me, making wishes every time the clock hits 11:11, smiling more, and reminding myself of how privileged I am to be able to have my family and friends always makes me feel happier. Not only that, but I also notice myself trying my best to be a little kinder and appreciating the things I tend to take more granted.

However, contrary to what I believe in, I usually tend to keep in mind the worst possible scenario to everything— my performance on a test, how people perceive me, and whether or not I made the right decision. But for you, it seems to be different, and I admire that a lot! Being able to see a cup half full is easier said than done, yet you are able to achieve that! Just as how you had faith in your airpods, which had been spinning in that water machine for ten minutes, I hope I will be able to be more courageous and think with more certainty.

  3. Chaitra, you have such an inspiring way of looking at the world! I really like your optimistic outlook on life and how you believe that things will be okay no matter what. In retrospect of the things that happened to me throughout my life, you are right. Even when I felt extremely miserable, disappointed, or angry, I eventually got over it. I’m sure that there are many instances where I felt like the world was going to end that I don’t even remember now. Still, no matter how hard I try, I can’t help but worry about things. I hope to learn from you and be able to view the world in a more optimistic, hopeful way in the future!

Anyway, I’m glad that your AirPods were alright. Just like your AirPods, let’s continue to hope for the best and pray that we all have a fulfilling junior year! Like you said, everything will be okay!

  4. Hi Chaitra! I really enjoyed reading your blog, especially because your positive outlook on life really came through in your writing. I liked how you connected your experiences in the Redwoods to your idea of finding “true inner peace.” It made me feel like I could understand why that time was so meaningful to you.

The AirPods story was definitely my favorite part because I would have been absolutely freaking out if mine went through a washing machine. I’m honestly impressed that they survived! I also really liked how you connected that story back to your identity at the end. Your belief that everything will eventually be okay is a really comforting way to look at life, and I think your message is something a lot of people could benefit from, especially during stressful times.
